(English part below)
Kleine raffinierte Biesterchen.
Two Runaways
A little story came into my mind, which happened quite a long time ago. It was in May 1990 and we spent our holidays in Co. Wicklow. We were three couples, two of them with a toddler. These two toddlers were our little daughter Katharina (18 months) and her “best friend” Jessica (20 months), the little girl of our friends Marion and Günther.
The third couple were my shortly married sister with her young husband.
However, this story is all about Katharina and Jessica, the two of them kept us busy.
The holiday started quite well. Marion and I with our two little girls, we took the plane to Dublin, while our husbands and the third couple went by car and ferry. We did it that way to have a car at site on one hand, and at the same time don’t travel such a long time with the babies on the other hand.
The group with the cars arrived in the early morning in Ireland and moved into our holiday home, while we only landed at midday in Dublin. Therefore, my husband could get us from the airport in time.
The first dilemma also happened directly at the airport as Marion’s suitcase was gone. Unfortunately, we had to determine that this was still in Düsseldorf. Of course, it should follow, but that meant Michael had to go once again to Dublin airport for it a day later.
Anyway, we arrived safe and happy at our holiday home. It was a typical Irish bungalow close to Brittas Bay, in the middle between Arklow and Wicklow. In the front of the house was the street and on the opposite there was the way down to the Beach. The location was fantastic.
The House had a beautiful large garden in the back. Fortunately, this was also enclosed. The men meticulously went off the fence, which was in places already slightly skew. There they discovered a few loopholes, but of course, they cobbled them together within a short while.
Therefore, we could leave the two little girls outside playing, without constantly looking after them and we had not to fear, that they could escape to the street or down the Beach way on their own.
We enjoyed the days and it worked wonderfully, the children could play outside, and we could keep us indoors at the same time. They came in a few times, but spent a lot of time in the garden, which was huge for these two little girls.
And so it was on that day! We were inside and prepared the lunch, Katharina and Jessica were out. Every now and then one of us looked in the garden or went to play with the two.
Then the meal was ready and Marion and I went out there, to get our girls. So well…we stood there and looked into the void.
For safety we looked in every corner of the garden, even so all was very well visible. We had a look in each room of the house, nothing! In the next moment, we all were outside for seeking, but the two girls stayed invisible.
Since the fence around the garden almost everywhere bordered on open terrain, we headed up in different directions. I ran in front of the House, no trace…
With fright, it came to my mind, what, if the two had been alone down to the sea? I ran across the street and wanted to turn on the way to the beach, while I looked up and down right and left the road.
And really, in the direction to the right on the way to Arklow I saw both walking well-behaved side by side, a few hundred meters far away in the middle of the road. I ran out to catch the two runaways, who were innocent looking at me. Who could be angry then?
For good luck, no car was coming for that moment, but on the other hand, we were in Ireland. Probably the next car would have stopped to bring the children back to us.
Meanwhile, our men had discovered the small hole in the fence under which the two mousies were crawled through. Sophisticated little beasts! Therefore, the fence was patched again!
And even so it wasn’t the first time for the two little girls to make nonsense. As small as they were, it was astonishing what all came to their mind. I could tell you stories….
At the end of our holidays, we had another experience at the airport. Marion and I had come to Dublin Airport, had checked in and given up the luggage. We had kept the buggies of the girls because they should be handed directly to the flight crew at boarding. We still had time left and the gates were not far away, we were able to see them already. Therefore, we had a good look around in the Duty-Free-Shop.
Sometime later we thought, oh, time is getting short, and so we started slowly in direction of the gate for our flight. Now we realized that we had to get to another terminal, which seemed to be well behind the other one. We were just starting in this direction as we were already called out by our names. Our flight was nearly about to start.
So, we stepped on it, put the kids in the buggies and ran towards the gate. We didn’t thought that the way would be that far. We had to get to the complete other side of the airport to the other terminal…some stairs down and through many long passageways.
Besides breathing, we reached our gate, the buggies were more or less torn off our hands, and we were pushed with the children on the plane. We barely sat down, when we already took off.
But we arrived home save and with all our luggage!
